Training

As a Modern Apprentice, you will be working towards the SVQ Social Services (Children and Young People) at SCQF 7. In addition you will learn Core Skills such as Communication, Working with Others, Numeracy and Information and Communications Technology.

You will attend a workshop class for your theory and underpinning knowledge one day every 4 weeks.

An assessor will visit your workplace to observe and assess your practical competence. Your portfolio of written evidence will demonstrate your good practice and will consist of reflective accounts, knowledge tasks and questions.

It can take approximately 12-15 months to complete the course, depending on the individual.

In the nursery, you will be expected to work as part of a team to provide a programme of activities for children as young as babies to 5 years old.

You will help the children learn and develop their physical, intellectual, language and social skills through organised play and care for them whilst away from their family. Other duties will include feeding, caring, developing and planning of activities. Domestic duties are required to ensure a safe environment for the children.

You should be highly motivated and have good communication skills.

The nursery, as your employer, is responsible for agreeing working hours and paying your apprenticeship wage. Please refer to the link below for current rates of pay for Modern Apprentices:

Working with children is very rewarding, and can lead to a fantastic career in early years!
