FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Q: What age do I need to be to apply?
A: We have training places available for 16-19 year olds Funded by Skills Development Scotland. (we can also access funding for any 20-29 year old applicants who are disabled or care experienced)
Q: What Skills are required?
A: No experience is necessary, however good communication skills are essential.
Q: How do I apply?
A: You can apply through this website by clicking the ‘Apply Now’ link at the top of this page or alternatively call 0141 332 0030 for an application form.
Q: What happens after my application form is submitted to the training centre?
A: Subject to you meeting the qualifications outlined above, an invitation to attend a presentation and interview will be offered.
Q: How will the presentation and interview be structured?
A: Group Presentation can last up to 1 – 2 hours. Information on the training course and qualification will be provided. You will be asked to complete an essay upon arrival, and individual interviews will be conducted after the presentation.
Q: What happens next?
A: If you are successful you will be assisted in sourcing employment. We can help you look for employment within a nursery in your area, and help you make arrangements to visit potential employers.
If successful with the employer they will commence the vetting procedure and a provisional start date agreed between you and the nursery (employer).
Q: What is vetting?
A: The Nursery is responsible for initiating the vetting procedure with you, which consists of two reference checks and obtaining a doctors letter to confirm that you are a suitable, fit and healthy person to work with children. They will also help you register yourself with the Protection of Vulnerable Groups (PVG), you may incur a cost for this registration, please check with the nursery. Upon receipt of the above, a final start date will be confirmed by your employer.
Q: What format does the training take?
A: You will be employed full time in a nursery and attend workshops in the training centre 1 day every 4 weeks. Your assessor will arrange visits to the nursery at agreed times to observe and assess set tasks and to assess your written work, full mornings or afternoons will be set aside for these visits.
Q: What hours will I work?
A: Working hours are at the discretion of each nursery. The majority of nurseries work a shift system and shift patterns will be discussed and arranged with the nursery (employer). Always check before accepting the position that you know what your working hours are.
Q: What is the rate of pay?
A: The nursery, as your employer, is responsible for paying your apprentice wage. Please refer to the link below for current rates of pay for Modern Apprentices.

Q: How long will it take to complete the course?
A: SVQs are individually tailored and 15-18 months is a guideline for completion.
Q: Will I be a fully qualified childcare worker upon completion?
A: The guidelines issued by the Scottish Social Services Council state that Social Services (Children and Young People) SCQF Level 7 is a nationally recognised qualification for a practitioner working with children.
