FAQs

The following are frequently asked questions and answers about the Modern Apprenticeship provided by Carousel Training Centre. If you still have any queries after reading this page please telephone 0141 332 0030.

What age do I need to be to apply?

We have training places available for 16 – 19 year olds funded by Skills Development Scotland (SDS).

What Skills are required?

No experience in Early Years is necessary, however good communication skills are essential.

How do I apply?

You can apply through this website by clicking the ‘Apply Now’ link at the top of the home page or alternatively call 0141 332 0030.

What happens after my application form is submitted to the training centre?

Once you have submitted your application form, a response email will be sent within 48 hours to inform you that your details are being processed.

Subject to your application being successful, an invitation to attend a presentation and interview will be offered.

Please note, not all applicants are chosen to attend an interview.

How will the presentation and interview be structured?

The interview and presentation will be held with a member of our Admissions Team and designed to provide you with relevant information about Modern Apprenticeships in general and the training we provide.  You will also be asked to produce a short piece of written work on what inspired you to choose a career in Early Years.

What happens next?

If you are successful at your interview, you will be assisted to source employment within an Early Years setting in your area.

We will assist you to set up interviews / interaction days with local employers.

If successful with an employer, they will commence the vetting procedure and a provisional start date agreed between you and the nursery (employer).

What is vetting?

The employer is responsible for initiating the vetting procedure with you, which normally consists of two reference checks confirming that you are  suitable to work with children and submitting an application to register on the Protection of Vulnerable Groups Scheme (PVG). Please note, you may incur a cost for this registration.

Following successful PVG screening a start date will be confirmed by your employer.

What format does the training take?

You will be employed in an Early Years setting and attend an online workshop 1 day every 4 weeks.

Your assessor will arrange visits to the workplace at agreed times to observe and assess set tasks and to assess your written work, full mornings or afternoons will be set aside for these visits.

What hours will I work?

Working hours are at the discretion of each employer.

The majority of Early Years settings work a shift system and shift patterns will be discussed and agreed with the employer. Always check before accepting the position that you know what your working hours are.

What is the rate of pay?

Your employer is responsible for paying your apprentice wage. Please refer to the link below for current rates of pay for Modern Apprentices.

How long will it take to complete the course?

SVQs are individually tailored however 12-15 months is a guideline for completion.

Will I be a fully qualified Early Years Practitioner upon completion?

The guidelines issued by the Scottish Social Services Council state that Social Services (Children and Young People) at SCQF Level 7 is a nationally recognised qualification for a practitioner working with children.
